How to Change a Business Address for an LLC

A limited liability company (LLC) can be a great way to structure your business and is generally easy to operate. However, to keep your business current with the state, you need to update your business address if it changes.

Why Changing Your Address Is Important

When you move your business, you have a lot on your mind, so registering the new address with the state might not be at the top of your to-do list. However, doing so is important. Official state paperwork and legal notices are sent to the address you have on file with the state and, if you don't update the address, you won't get them. Missing out on important paperwork or notices could cause you to miss filing deadlines. When this happens, your LLC will get hit with penalties and you could even lose your business license. There are two ways to change your business address: filing online or by mail.

Changing Your LCC Address Online

Changing your business address online can be the most convenient method. Just follow these steps:

1. Locate your LLC formation documents (such as the articles of organization), any business licenses the company has, and tax forms showing the company's employee identification number (EIN), if you have one.

2. Go to the website for the agency responsible for regulating businesses in your state—usually the Secretary of State—to determine if you can change the address online. Remember that you must change the address in the state where you formed the LLC and any other state in which the LLC is authorized to do business.

3. Follow the directions for the online address change. Verify any information necessary from your formation, tax, and licensing papers. Generally you need:

  • the business name
  • the old and new addresses
  • the name and address of your registration license
  • the identification number on your business licenses
  • your EIN

4. Complete and submit the form.

5. Pay the necessary filing fee, which varies by state but is generally less than $100.

6. Print a confirmation of the change.

Changing Your LLC Address by Mail

If you find it more convenient to change your LLC address by mail, follow these steps:

1. Locate your LLC formation documents, any business licenses the company has, and tax forms showing the company's EIN, if you have one.

2. Contact the state agency where you filed the formation paperwork, as well as any other department in states where your LLC is authorized to do business, and ask for the LLC business address change form. You should be able to download the form from the department's website.

3. Complete the form, sign it, and date it. Most states require the following information:

  • the business name
  • the old and new addresses
  • the name and address of your registration license
  • the identification number on your business licenses
  • your EIN

4. Mail the form, filing fee, and any other required documentation to the address indicated on the form. Be sure to keep a copy for your records and request a return receipt or other such confirmation so you can have proof of delivery.

Other Address Changes

Be sure to also change your address with the Internal Revenue Service, your state taxation agency, bank, and creditors. If you have a business license from your state, county, or city, you will also need to notify the necessary governmental agency of the change.
